#1 JazzLogical "Event of the Year" 2015 - the (re)encounter of the Lisbon Jazz Sextet

  #3 JazzLogical "Musician/Group of the Year" 2015

The Lisbon Jazz Sexteto (SJL) was formed in 1984 and established itself as one of the first and most notable Portuguese jazz groups, full-time professionals. It was the first time that a jazz group appeared with a relatively large constitution and, above all, with a front of three wind instruments (a trumpet and two saxophones). In 1988, they published their only album - Ao Encontro , recorded the previous year.

The challenge launched by António Curvelo and Manuel Jorge Veloso to the musicians who participated in the Sexteto's only album to, after almost 30 years, se  find themselves on stage again as part of the Cycle " Histories of Jazz in Portugal”  was enthusiastically accepted by all of them, with the immediate promise de not only revisit

creatively the repertoire of disco but also to debut new compositions and arrangements by its various members.

Overshadowed by the sudden disappearance of Jorge Reis, the other musicians decided to keep the project going, now also as a heartfelt tribute to their companion and friend, inviting the young Ricardo Toscano to take his place. The fact that Ricardo Toscano was chosen by his elders as a guest member of the SJL speaks volumes about the indisputable quality that he already radiates with so few years of professional activity.

Adapted from  Jazz Sexteto concert hall sheet from Lisboa at Culturgest, text by António Curvelo and Manuel Jorge Veloso

What could have been nothing more than a healthy exercise in nostalgia ended up being translated, on stage, into music full of purpose and marked by a surprisingly contemporary sound; what was supposed to be a “one off” resulted in a flood of requests from the programmers of various festivals (like o Angra Jazz or a_cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_Festa do Avante) and the most important concert halls (such as a Culturgest, Centro Cultural Vila Flor or o Teatro Micaelense) 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_However, the impossibility on the part of bassist Pedro Barreiros to reconcile his extensive schedule as a teacher with the concert schedule of the sextet himself led to his replacement by Francisco Brito, another of the young people who are already an absolute certainty in our jazz .

O trompetista Tomás Pimentel , os saxofonistas  Ricardo Toscano  e  Edgar Caramelo , o pianista  Mário Laginha , o contrabaixista  Francisco Brito  e o baterista  Mário Barreiros  constituem, pois, o "renovado" Sexteto de Jazz de Lisboa, another squad of honor that in 2016 will take the main stage of the Funchal Jazz Festival.
