Rudresh Mahanthappa is, without any doubt, the most recognized and awarded saxophonist (if not the musician) of the last decade of jazz history,_cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_continuando the awards and nominations that have come to him, with greater intensity than ever, over the last year.

Although with some really noteworthy appearances as a sideman (with, among many others, Jack DeJohnette, Rez Abbasi, Danilo Pérez, Jason Robinson or Clark Terry), the collaboration he maintained over several years with the pianist Vijay Iyer (from which resulted, in all, from no less than nine albums) and, increasingly, his career as a leader has been the main focus of a path that already has more than two decades of continuous and intense activity and about a dozen of records to his name, as well as several co-led projects with Steve Lehman, Bunky Green, Kadri Gopalnath, Mark Dresser, and Gerry Hemingway.

For the creation of Bird Calls , Mahanthappa did not limit himself to a mere reinterpretation of the repertoire of the great master and father of bebop and modern jazz, Charlie “Bird” Parker, having previously composed all the music for the project, in a kind of “Charlie Parker reimagined", a task through which he makes clear than ever the high originality  of his musical being and the need that, whenever true art is a postas de lado a colagem, a imitação e a repetição. Para a apresentação de  Bird Calls  no Funchal Jazz Festival 2016, Rudresh Mahanthappa features musicians as distinguished as trumpeter Adam O'Farrill , pianist Bobby Avey , bassist Thomson Kneeland and drummer Rudy Royston .
