The subject of several nominations for Grammy®, Miguel Zenón is one of the most outstanding alto saxophonists in jazz today. Until a few years ago seen as a true rising star, Zenón is now recognized as a major force in jazz practiced in New York.
In the present decade alone, and in addition to recognitions as prestigious as a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Fellowship, Zenón has claimed five first places in the critics' polls from DownBeat, JazzTimes and the Jazz Journalists Association:
DownBeat 2010
- Alto Saxophone rising star
JazzTimes 2012
- Alto Saxophone
JazzTimes 2014
- Jazz Musician of the Year
- Alto Saxophone
Jazz Journalists Association 2015
- Alto Saxophonist of the Year
Miguel Zenón has also been mixing, with great spontaneity and relevance, the new jazz practiced in New York with the music of Puerto Rico, where he is from. This mixture is, in fact, one of the greatest reasons for the interest and success of his music, which could not have fallen into better hands than those of the quartet he has led for more than a decade, with Luis Perdomo, Hans Glawischnig and Henry Cole, and with whom he will perform_cc781905-5cde- 3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_on the second night of concerts on the main stage do Funchal Jazz Festival 2015, on the 3rd of July, at 21:30.
