The duo Maria João & Mário Laginha represents an example of unusual complicity and a high point of jazz and sung music in Portugal. We also talk about two of the most important ambassadors of national jazz, with several hundred concerts across borders, across the various corners of the globe, in addition to more than a dozen albums recorded over the last two decades.

Maria João owns a unique vocal instrument and an ear that allows her to explore any musical territory with surprising naturalness and implacable security.  For these reasons, to which_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_a tremendous spontaneity and ability to improvise, Maria João represents the envy of all singers, Esperanza Spalding being the one who considers her, alongside the mythical Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan or Dinah Washington, as one of its main models and inspirations.

Mário Laginha is, among us, a pianist who doesn't need any introductions. Frequently performing solo, Laginha has met with enormous success, indoors and out, with the famous formation of 3 pianos (with Pedro Burmester and the much-missed Bernardo Sassetti), as well as through a long partnership in duo with Sassetti. In parallel to his work with Maria João, Mário Laginha has been leading, for almost two decades, his own trio, which includes two of the most illustrious musicians of Portuguese jazz - bassist Bernardo Moreira and drummer Alexandre Frazão - and who, arguably, constitutes one of the top formations of national jazz. It is precisely with Bernardo Moreira and Alexandre Frazão , joined by accordionist João Frade , that the duo of Maria João & Mário Laginha will perform in Funchal Jazz Festival 2016.
