I am very honored by the invitation of Funchal Jazz to star in the opening concert of the 2018 Festival.
The project that I will be delighted to present is a tribute to the prominent jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), a true eminence grise of bebop, whose compositions have always fascinated me for their profound beauty, an original, complex, bumpy and asymmetrical, sometimes in a meditative tone, sometimes in an interrogative way, sometimes in an aggressively harrowing way, always disconcerting and unpredictable, and sometimes unexpectedly joyful, of a pure and hard joy. Music by timeless quality that stands the challenge of time. I was equally seduced by the laconic, irregular and surgically dissonant character of Monk's pianistic phrasing, which manages to reach the very essence of the music with a single note.
This project had its debut in 2006, in the late “Chega de Saudade”, in quintet format, with João and Pedro Moreira, Ricardo Dias and João Sousa, and since then it has been cyclically presented in several spaces in Funchal.
At the concert on the 7th of July, I will have the privilege of having a quartet of Madeirans by my side: the illustrious musicians Alexandre Andrade (trumpet), Ricardo Dias (double bass) and Jorge Maggiore (drums), my companions for a long time in these monkish wanderings. and others, and a special guest, the excellent saxophonist Francisco Andrade. With all of them I feel a stimulating musical and aesthetic affinity, and I share the intense emotion that the music of Thelonious Monk arouses in us.
I hope that our enthusiasm is matched by public support.
