Bill Frisell is one of the most strikingly original and innovative jazz guitarists, as well as one of the most prolific musicians of the last 35 years, in any style. He has recorded 40 albums as a leader and more than a dozen records as a co-leader (with Jim Hall, Fred Hersch, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Vinícius Cantuária, Petra Haden, Thomas Morgan…) and can be heard on 130 recordings as a sideman, with special highlight to the 15 albums he made with the acclaimed trio led by drummer Paul Motian, which also featured Joe Lovano.

Despite the extremely diverse instrumental possibilities that globally define his recorded output, Frisell has frequently and successfully revisited the combination of guitar, bass and drums with the bassist Tony Scherr and the drummer Kenny Wollesen.

Geniuses collide at Funchal Jazz as iconic guitarist Bill Frisell and his trio play brand new and exciting original compositions.

Bill Frisell has quietly been the most brilliant and unique voice to come along in jazz guitar since Wes Montgomery (…) he may also be one of the most promising composers of American music on the current scene.

Stereophile

Frisell is a revered figure among musicians - like Miles Davis and few others, his signature is built from pure sound and inflection; an anti-technique that is instantly identifiable.

The Philadelphia Inquirer

Bill Frisell is the Clark Kent of the electric guitar (…) But besides being a guitar genius, he's turned into a terrific songwriter.

Spin

What's really distinctive is Frisell's feel for the shape of songs, for their architecture; it's a virtuosity of deep structure rather than surface.

Wire

Bill Frisell plays the guitar like Miles Davis played the trumpet.

The New Yorker

The electric guitar sound of the decade (…) His guitar sound is unmistakable (…) a lyrical victory of man over machine, of personality over mechanics, of message over mathematics.

Minneapolis Star Tribune

I’m a fan of Bill Frisell’s music for a lot of reasons.

Paul Simon

He just makes everything better and takes it to a whole other level of complete heaven where the angels join the session.

Hal Willner

He’s had one of the loudest impacts on creative guitar.

Nels Cline
